Most people on Earth probably have fatty liver. I’m sure there are a lot of children who also have fatty liver. There were many alcoholic fatty liver, but recently these days many non-alcoholic fatty liver are reported. Fatty liver can be developed into hepatitis and cirrhosis which is in the stage of irreparable. Severe cirrhosis could be liver cancer in worst case. Fatty liver is not diagnosed by enzyme levels in the blood tests and needs further inspections through ultrasound. You can’t survive if your liver is broken because of its poison-detoxifying functions. If you are diagnosed at the hospital, your quality of life may worsen.
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is characterized by fat accumulation in the liver over 5% of the liver cells. In pathophysiology, fatty liver is explained with 2 features. Accumulation of fatty acids causes steatosis, also called fatty change. This abnormal fat retention within the liver is constantly in the progress of oxidative stress and liver cell damage.
Dietary polyphenols are well-known antioxidant agents to help this metabolic disorder. Polyphenols may offer various health benefits, including potential positive effects on the liver. They can also prevent oxidative stress and modulate the synthesis of fatty lipid cells. Here are some foods rich in polyphenols that you may consider incorporating into your diet. Coffee
Coffee contains various polyphenols and has been associated with a lower risk of liver diseases, including liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. In 2010, research on the protective role of coffee in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease reported its effective function in reducing fat (1). The research team investigated abnormal liver function in 245 patients. 1-3 cups of coffee a day were administered in this study. The result was amazing. Less fatty liver is present in coffee, causing a 23% reduction in fatty liver risk, and may reduce progression to liver fibrosis, meaning hardening of the liver, by 32%.
Coffee has liver protective effects. Antioxidative polyphenols inside coffee help liver inflammation. But in addition to polyphenols, caffeine in coffee often causes some troubles. It’s helpful to have coffee with no caffeine or decaffeine.
Green tea
Green tea, like coffee, also contains a lot of polyphenols to reduce fat in the liver. It is believed to have many beneficial effects on diseases, one of which is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The study on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial with ultrasonography (2). A total of 80 volunteers had fatty liver, and some of them received green tea extract supplements for 90 days. The green tea extract group showed a reduction in ALT and AST levels, which are key indicators of liver inflammations, after 12 weeks. But ALT and AST levels are only one of the signs of fatty liver, so we need to see deep inside.
An animal study of green tea extract might be a good example. It was found green tea effectively prevents the occurrence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and its underlying mechanisms were inhibiting body weight gain, reducing the accumulation of fat, improving lipid profile and oxidative stress, and ameliorating hepatic steatosis (3).
Green tea is rich in catechins, a type of polyphenol. It has been studied for its potential to reduce liver fat and improve liver function. The catechins have been shown to have beneficial effects on oxidative stress, which leads to chronic inflammation and damage to the liver. Therefore, green tea seems like a potential food option useful for fatty liver.
Berries
Polyphenol could be classified in the chemical structures into flavonoids and non-flavonoids. Among the flavonoids, there are catechins in green tea and powerful antioxidative anthocyanin. The anthocyanin is rich in berries and potatoes. Anthocyanin in bilberry extract demonstrates improving insulin resistance and liver lipid metabolism through the AMPK pathway (4). The AMPK exhausts blood sugar, which will accumulate as fat in the liver for other cells to use.
Anthocyanins have been proven their role in the modulation of lipids and fat in the human body. There is a study evaluating the effect of anthocyanin on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients (5). 8 week intervention, drinking purple sweet potato beverages twice a day, anthocyanin intake reduces levels of liver enzymes, especially r-glutamyltransferases.
Many people may have fatty liver. But people only worry about what they take for medication or surgery. Why do we get fatty liver? Are we enough with medicines or nutritional supplements for that? Can we really recover our liver? There is the simplest way to help the liver. Think about what we eat every day. There are so many foods that are good or that burden the liver. Need to avoid sugary and fatty foods and find good foods that reduce the fat ratio in the liver. While you takes those foods, try enough vitamins and minerals. Vitamin B group also plays an important role in various metabolisms in the liver, so take enough.
